The first ever (and only) Miss Chinatown Canada pageant was held in 1989 to have all the Miss Chinatowns all over Canada come together and compete. The pageant was sponsored by the Cathay Lions Club and was held in Vancouver and televised on Chinavision Pay TV all across Canada.
The 4 hour long pageant is loosely modeled after the Miss Chinatown USA contest. Many of the contestants also competed at Miss Chinese International representing their own Chinatowns. This grand event invited former Miss Hong Kong host Ivan Ho to come be one of the judges. The girls were judged on their poise, beauty and talent and competed in swimsuit, Q&A, qi pao, talent portions. During the awarding of Miss Photogenic, the awarder mistakenly put the sash of 'Miss Talent' on Sandy Ho. The emcee jokingly says "this proves that the results were not determined in advanced".
