2014 MISS HONG KONG RESULTS
#15 VERONICA BECOMES A TRIPLE AWARD WINNER
香港小姐競選冠軍誕生15號邵珮詩成為三料冠軍
「港姐冠軍 由你話事」

The 2014 Miss Hong Kong pageant came to a conclusion on Aug. 31.  In the end #15 Veronica Shiu was crowned the winner.  Veronica won the Miss Friendship award before the semi-final and also edged out #3 Linna Huynh by 1 vote to win the Miss Photogenic Award on Finals night.  After the Finalists came out in swimsuits (which featured really cool slow-motion videos of the contestants in the backdrop), Q&A and various rounds, including an ice-skating in gown (Veronica was the only one that looked comfortable on the ice), the judges selected #7 Katherine Ho, #9 Erin Wong and #15 Veronica Shiu as the Top 3.  The home audience/viewers then got to vote for the final placements of the Top 3.  It came as a surprise to many including the hosts DoDo Cheng, Wong Cho Nam, Nat Chan, Eric Tsang that #3 Linna and #11 Sofiee did not make the cut as they were favorites.  To be honest, favorite #11 Sofiee had an average performance.  #3 Linna had a good performance, definitely improved a lot since Semi-final.  The night, however, truly belonged to Veronica who shined in every aspect.  I still think the Top 3 should have been #3, #11, #15 although #7 also had a good performance.  I was surprised that #9 Erin Wong got 1st Runner-up, she even got many 'dislikes' in the Top 3 round voted by the audience, whereas Katherine and Veronica both got many 'likes'.  There was no Top 5 this year and also for the first time the winner also bagged Miss Friendship & Miss Photogenic.  Grace Wong came close in 2007 when she won those awards and came in 2nd.

The homeviewers/audience's votes for after the announcement of the Top 3.  As you can see, Veronica won by a landslide.

#15 Veronica - 156,191 votes
#9 Erin Wong - 28,894 votes
#7 Katherine Ho - 24,903 votes
#15 Veronica in the swimsuit Q&A.
#11 Sofiee in the swimsuit Q&A.

The Top 10 Finalists have been selected after the viewers and judging panel got to each eliminate 3 of the Semi-finalists.  The 10 Finalists are:

#1 Jan Tse, #3 Linna Huynh, #5 CK Leung, #6 Yammi Lam, #7 Katherine Ho
#9 Erin Wong, #11 Sofiee Ng, #12 Janet Choi, #13 Crystal Wong, #15 Veronica Shiu

The night opened with the contestants in their wedding gown photoshoot in Japan and self introductions explaining how they each got their name. The girls each came out and talked more about themselves in the 2nd round and 3rd round was swimsuits, then came the announcement of the Finalists.  It was surprising to see #2 Rosina get eliminated, perhaps it was from the viewer voting?

Two awards have been handed out prior to the Semi-final.  The first is the Tourism Ambassador award, which is often a good indicator of Top 5 Finalist material.  The winner of this award for 2014 is flight attendant #11 Sofiee Ng.  Her being well-traveled helped her to win.  Sofiee says she never expected to win but of all the places she's traveled to, Hong Kong is her favorite because it's where she, her family and friends call home and because it's such a vibrant city full of culture.  She will do her best to promote Hong Kong tourism this coming year.

Last year's Miss Tourism Ambassador Grace Chan presents Sofiee with the award.

The second award is Miss Friendship.  For the first time in pageant history, there was a tie between 2 contestants, so the contestants voted a second time to decide the winner. ( I think they should have given the award to both girls).  After the second round of voting, the girls selected #15 Veronica Shiu as Miss Friendship.  Last year's Miss Friendship Tammy Au-yang presented the award.
